IRLS 564: CLIC’s

Pre-Reading #10

Taylor, P. (2006). Coming soon: films on file Digital Distribution: Want to download a feature length film to your TV, computer of iPod? Financial Times, London.

Paul Taylor writes that the film industry is moving towards digital distribution. This is in reaction to lagging profits from box office and rental sales. Taylor writes that the film industry was reluctant to distribute in digital formats because of piracy and the possibility of detracting individuals that wanted to go to the movies. This is no longer the case. MovieBeam, the new digital distribution service, was launched this February and studios such as Disney are providing access to its entire collection. The service will be provided by a box similar to cable boxes. A signal from the box will transmit the “datacast” to televisions, PC’s and even iPods. Taylor tells us that studio executives are merely reacting to customer demands. Customers want the convenience to access films when and where they want to.

I chose this article because of its relevance to my film CLIC’s. If customers are looking for this level of convenience, should film CLIC’s provide similar services. This could mean vast digitization projects. Also, CLIC’s may be required to have a greater online presence.

I would be interested in seeing how film CLIC’s are responding to digital trends. Are they reacting in accord with the Hollywood studios or is there resistance.
