Harris, P. (2005). Boomer vs. echo boomer: the work war? T +D. Alexandria. 59 (2), 44-50.
This article discusses the 4 generations in today’s workplace and how to get these diverse groups to work together. Managers need to learn how to deal with each generation’s working style and the needs of each. There is a rise in training companies who work with corporations in how to deal with this unique situation.
The issues and concerns discussed by Mr. Harris are applicable to every workplace in every sector; and for the untrained manager it is extremely difficult to deal with so many conflicting personalities. In addition to training companies, which may not be feasible for smaller companies, there are also software packages, such as SkillSoft that offer 6 courses on generational issues. Regardless of the tools used, it is necessary to address these issues.
I am interested in some of the techniques discussed in the article, and will be seeking out further explanations of the methodologies used. Absent from the article is a discussion on how to deal with employees that straddle a generation, or those in one generation who seem more like a previous, or later, generation. While I do agree that there are general characteristics of a particular generation, I do not think it is as cut and dried as this article makes it seem.
