DiMattia, S.S (2001). National Geographic’s evolving library. Library Journal, 126(12),44-46.
This article breaks down the various aspects of the library that contributes to the library reaching its fullest potential; and garnered the library the Innovations in Technology award given by the SLA. The 6 attributes are as follows: competitive advantage, survey, “value add” services, partnerships, staff competencies, and KM (knowledge management) across the board.
The approaches and attributes used by the National Geographic library are applicable to any corporate library. Not only do they improve service, they are also a way to prove a CLIC’s value to its company. If a library can prove itself in each of these areas than its value becomes clearly inherent.
This article is very short, giving only a brief overview of each attribute. I would like a more in depth analysis of each attribute. For example, Ms. Canby is discussing surveys she used I would like to see a sample of the questions used as well as some of the responses give (with confidentiality maintained, of course). I am also interested in how these attributes fit within the overall NSG mission.
