IRLS 564: CLIC’s

Pre-Reading #8

Martelli, P. F. (2006). Evidence Based Management. Harvard Business Review.

In assessing a qualitative study on how health care leaders use evidence in operational and strategic decision making, Martelli writes that evidence should follow the “four A’s.” Evidence should be accessible, accurate, actionable, and applicable. Martelli writes that this recommendation should be made if leaders are using evidence in making decisions. Martelli tells us that research suggests that leaders tend to use on-hand evidence for making management decisions. Martelli claims that external evidence simply provides for better informed managerial decisions. So, Martelli is suggesting that managers should use external evidence and when they do so they ought to employ the “four A’s” in selecting and evaluating the information.

This is relevant to CLIC’s for many reasons. External evidence, such as demographics, can provide decision makers with insights into how employees work, how they like to be treated and what attributes their demographic may offer. This can as Martelli writes make for better informed decisions. Also, the “four A’s” Martelli refers to are a staple in the information profession. This may be rudimentary for librarians, but in collecting information it is always important to evaluate it. Furthermore, CLIC’s hardly hire only information professionals so these lessons can benefit the company in general.

Martelli writes that further research is taking place and is examining how employing the “four A’s” benefits decision making. I would be interested in seeing how such a study was conducted and what the results are.
