IRLS 564: CLIC
Pre-Reading #3:
Ludwig, L. Starr, S. (2005). "Library as Place: Results of a Delphi Study." Journal of the Medical Library Association. Accessed on June 27, 2006 from: http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1175798.
Starr and Ludwig write that by 2015 there will be a substantial change in medical libraries. They claim that librarians will need to redefine their roles within the libraries as administrative needs, the information environments and information technologies change. They claim that there may be resistance to this change because it will happen so rapidly. Yet, this change represents an opportunity for librarians to play a greater role in institutional change.
Starr and Ludwig’s conclusions are persuasive and reflect greater trends within librarianship. This is relevant to CLIC’s because Starr and Ludwig’s findings highlight how information professionals can employ their skills in institutional change. The space in which libraries operate may need to change in order to better serve users. So, CLIC librarians can learn from what is happening in medical libraries.
I would be interested in learning how specific library spaces are being changed. It seems as though medical libraries are using their spaces as more of an information commons. It seems as though medical librarians will need to be more proficient in information technology.
