Pre-Reading #2:

Blumenstein, L. (2005). "Librarian as CM Leader." Library Journal. Accessed on June 27, 2006 from: http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6256260.html.

Blumenstein writes that companies are looking to Content Management (CM) systems in order to control and access company information. Blumenstein claims that CM’s make companies more efficient, competitive and organized. These CM’s require individuals that are proficient in the organization and dissemination of information and other skills such as metadata construction. This sounds like a job for librarians.

Blumenstein points to important trends for both information professionals and large companies in general. The introduction of more CM’s in the private sector can equate to more jobs for information professionals. Yet this is not only good news for librarians, Blumenstein provides compelling information that has suggests that CM’s under the management of librarians can increase the bottom line for companies. Also, with librarians at the helm, CM’s can be very user friendly.

It would seem as though CM’s require maintenance and updating so I would be interested in reading more on whether or not these jobs are long-term positions.
